Eyes That Will Not See, Ears That Will Not Hear

Open your eyes and unplug your ears and see and listen to the horrors that Obama is unleashing on not only this country, but others as well.

Do you care that the world is in total chaos?
No! I am most worried about Miley Cyrus.

Isn’t global poverty such a shame?
So what? I’m watching the ‘Price Is Right’ game.

Your government is spying on you.
‘Survivor’s’ on and that’s not true.

There’s been a drone strike in Pakistan.
Oh, good! I still love Pokémon.

I cannot vote; I’ve no I.D.!
How do you like my new TV?

People are dying for lack of insurance.
Botox will work; I’ve my doctor’s assurance.

Whistleblowers are thrown in the brig.
Does this make my butt look big?

The homeless have no place to stay.
Who will the ‘Bachelor’ pick today?

My house is in foreclosure, what should I do?
I think my SUV is the perfect color blue.

Wake up! Wake up before it’s too late!
How you do carry on! But I have a date.

There are so many people who choose to remain ignorant of what is going on. They would rather tune in to the latest scandal on some reality TV show then educate themselves on what really matters. Though some of us try, we cannot get through because as I’ve stated, they have ‘eyes that will not see and ears that will not hear’. Will they wake up? I sincerely doubt it.

  1. I know you are dead serious Shelby and that is what I love about your work BUT as right on as this is …….. it made me laugh!
Keep it up my friend ….. you’re my drug of choice!

    1. LOL!! Tubular, you know that I have a sense of humor. It is what has kept me nearly sane for years. Yes, I am serious, but you can see how ridiculous we are just by what we care about the most. We don’t sweat the big stuff because we’re too busy on frivolous bullshit and nonsense and meanwhile, we’re getting our asses handed to us!

John Kerry has the audacity to stand and lie about what a ‘conscience’ this government has because they’re so concerned about what is going on in Syria when we’ve used chemical weapons on so many people and caused so many of their deaths, we can ill afford to point fingers. We should be slinking away and hoping that no one remembers our war crimes and how many civilians we have killed in the wars we have started. I am so sure that people feel so much better knowing that they are dead and considered ‘collateral damage’ and others were happy to have been killed by ‘friendly fire’. I have never heard anything so ridiculous in my life!

Thank you for stopping by!! I’ve been on your blog as well! Great work as usual!!! I left a screaming comment because I am about ready to pull my hair out!!!

  2. Shelby –

This is yet another epic piece of perfection. You nailed it again, with the title, and with every single line and word, with a breathtaking precision. In fact this is it … this is one of the most relevant pieces of literature written in our present days that should be read and understood by everyone.

A million times THANK YOU for expressing the very heart of all that one should know about our reality, and which is the most impossible of all to utter. It is like the silent shriek in those nightmares, when I can sense an imminent danger, I want to cry out loud to ask for help and warn everyone around me, but I realise I can’t produce any voice.

And yes it is simply mind-boggling that a tiny minority of a most corrupt lobby of political and business fortune hunter criminals (I decided to refrain from honoring them with the generous “elites” title) could distort the minds of billions to a degree that they remain in such a deep oblivion. They are unable to realise how much they are corrupted by this ultimately flawed system and can’t see, it is them who are being destroyed in the process. Just one example of the numerous: according to Prof David Harvey – who explained how the dynamics of capitalism inevitably lead to phenomena like the housing crisis – the majority are so ignorant about this fact that when those who lost their homes to foreclosure were asked in a poll whom they blame for their misfortune, all of them replied that they blame themselves!

And yes, the subject is deadly serious (with reference to the remarks of the former commenter), and I can only hope and wish he/she – and everyone – would take the content of this poem as such and would realise the weight of the danger our planet is facing before it indeed will be too late.

    1. Skywanderer, I have suffered the same as those dreams you speak of where you sense imminent danger and you try to scream but nothing comes out. My frustration knows no bounds. We can talk and try and get through to some people until we turn purple and collapse and they will continue on as though nothing untoward has happened.

I have stated this so many times and I don’t mind stating it again. When we bury our head and refuse to see the stark raving truth, we are in essence pretending like the disease will just clear up on its own, we don’t have to do anything. We don’t need to take a cure for it. People can ignore it, but the disease gets worse and if they wait too late to finally get treatment, the patient dies. The same can be applied to what is going on all around us. We have lost out on so much already and still people refuse to look up from their television screens, they refuse to realize that they are doing exactly what they’ve been programmed to do and that is to concentrate on entertainment and all that glitters and not bother about the harsh reality that so many people are facing each and every day. By the time, the shit gets all up in their face, it will be too late to do anything about it and therein lies the problem. How the hell can those who do not want to see, who do not want to hear, be made to realize that their turn is coming? Like I’ve said before, “I despair, but I shall keep on trying!”

Thank you ever so much for your enthusiastic liking of this poem and for your so thought provoking comment. We are all in this together, but many still need to be made aware of that fact.

    1. A thousand thanks my friend. Maybe I should put it up on a billboard, the only problem with that is that people are already ramming into the back of each other due to texting, sexting and applying make-up, eating and countless numbers of other distractions. I am just shaking my head over it all!

      1. Thank you. I hear you (at least I think I do)
Yet, imho, maybe shouldn’t give up trying …Maybe one day the word will break through those thick walls.
After all we all have had our days of dreaming, haven’t we?

    1. You are a true champion of the cause!!! Thank you so very much!!!! I have posted it on Facebook, but I’m such a newbie there, I haven’t had anytime to gather friends or do anything with it. I’ll keep plugging away because all we can do is to keep trying!

      1. You are most welcome, my dear friend. I can so relate also to your experience on social media. I am not on Facebook, only on Twitter, and even though I have more than a thousand “followers” I do have the impression I will always remain a newbie there. With very rare exceptions what I can read in the tweets running through the timeline are merely the different forms of the same escapism, business and the petty priorities that you have captured so eloquently in the second lines of the poem.

The contrast and tension between the two opposing worlds is exactly what has been bothering me the most, and very often I do wonder why I am still trying. It is like talking to the walls, yet I go on talking. Some time ago I posted this to express my social media frustration:

  3. Thanks for this powerful post. Never liked bread or circuses much — and we don’t even get good ones. Then again, it’s more of a shell game isn’t it? Scary and sad. We mustn’t give up though, as that also bolsters the system – those who can’t be deceived, distracted or bribed can often be discouraged. Fight the bastards no matter what. You never know which pebble may hit that unsuspected chink in their armor.

    1. You are so right! The ‘deceived, distracted and BRIBED’, that about wraps it up all in a neat package with a pretty big bow on top. Because that’s how we like things. We don’t want to know about the horrors being committed in our name. We don’t want to know that there are people with not enough food to eat, nor a place to lay their head. As long as we’ve got ours, we don’t give a damn about the poor man shuffling down the street with his belongs on his back. The ‘deceived and the distracted’ need to wake the hell up and the BRIBED, well…I don’t know if there’s any help for that bunch. But there are many in their number as we very well know. They say that everyone has their price, I would like to believe that that is not true. I haven’t become that cynical yet.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Glad to see you. Come again anytime!

  4. Skywanderer, the contrast has also been bothering me. That is why I write so much on the subject between the haves and the have nots. Between those who are barely eking out an existence and those who do not even blink at the price at the pump. I would never be satisfied with having everything I thought I wanted knowing that there are others who regardless of the weather, be it 110 degrees or 40 below are homeless and dying. I cannot imagine people having 12 and 15 homes when there are millions without one. How could I live with myself coveting that much wealth and sitting all perky in church as though that is all that matters. I will always believe in ‘practice what you preach’ and there are so many who talk the talk, but would not walk the walk. There are those who feel that they will never be impacted by adversity, that somehow they are immune. Look how rich Bernie Madoff was and now he’s sitting in prison. Unfortunately, the many who are corrupt are hardly ever prosecuted, the Wall Street thugs are a prime example of that. Their bad behavior was rewarded. But let someone stand in the welfare line and people will come down on them like a ton of bricks. Corporate welfare is fine, people welfare is on my dime and they should be ashamed of themselves for not pulling their bootstraps up and getting with the program. The people who think like that are who I have a problem with.

And no, I may never make a difference with this blog, but like you, I will keep on plodding along. Because who knows, it ain’t over ’til it’s over! So, you stay strong, keep writing because even though we may lose skirmish after skirmish, I am not conceding. I am not waving the white flag of defeat. I’ll admit that sometimes I feel stretched too thin, what with so many issues to take on, but when I read blogs like yours and others, I feel that citizen journalism has more relevance than the MSM. We are not bought and paid for and we tell it like it is. Sometimes, I come across as crass, but life ain’t pretty and I’m fed up. We must keep on, regardless of whether we reach a small audience or a large one. If just one person reads what we have written and takes the time to question the status quo, to ponder what they have read, then all very well and good. The other great thing about this is that people from all over the world are reading our thoughts, our experiences, our struggles, our victories. So, my friend, keep on writing, I see you and I hear you!

  5. Thank you so much T E for commenting.

You are right, this issue is not new and many do not care to figure it out. They are quite happy remaining clueless. They try and admit nothing in that will destroy the illusion of their ‘Utopian’ world. They ‘see’ and ‘hear’ only what they wish to ‘see’ and ‘hear’. The rest gets tuned out and the bright, shiny gadgets help to keep them blind and deaf to what is going on around them.

Thankfully, there are a few of us who are trying to make a difference, who refuse to be distracted and hypnotized. I can only hope that we grow in number because as dark as these days are for many, there are darker days yet to come.

Again, I thank you for your comment.
