For Fifty Years

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

For fifty years, we have tried and we have cried.
For fifty years, you have lied and we have died.

For fifty years, we sought to integrate.
For fifty years, you’ve shown us only hate.

For fifty years, we had a dream.
For fifty years, you took the cream.

For fifty years, we have been dragged back.
For fifty years, our crime is that we’re Black.

For fifty years, we have endured discrimination.
For fifty years, we have been the face of incarceration.

For fifty years, we have been a victim.
For fifty years, we have not known freedom.

For fifty years, we were denied an education.
For fifty years, we now demand an explanation!

This is a follow-up to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. I refuse to be a victim anymore. I refuse to accept 2nd class citizenship. I refuse to accept voter disenfranchisement. I refuse to flinch in the face of racism. I refuse to go back in time. Fifty years later, with my head held high, for every law that is passed to dismiss me as a human being, I will not quietly submit to that humiliation! I throw the gauntlet down! This battle rages on!

  1. Wow. What can I say to that, Shelby? I started working in the civil rights and anti-war movement back in the ’60’s and saw the battle as an up hill struggle. Now in the NEXT century thing are in reverse.

The process of the population waking up is doubtful except when what Blacks have known for years knocks on their own front door. But even then as you pointed out in “Eyes That Won’t See ….” will they get off their big fat white asses and stand together?

    Hmmm, I guess I have a dream!

    1. Well, tube, I am not going to wait for them to “get off their big fat white asses.” I am going to agitate, aggravate and instigate. I am already starting at the local level. Everywhere I go, I am in the news. I intend to become a ‘news’ item. Everywhere I go, I can be found in the midst of a group who are hung onto my every word. What I have found out is that many people are clueless and I proceed to ‘clue’ them in.

Case in point, when the City of Minneapolis via the group, Minneapolis Energy Options, decided to hold a city council member’s feet to the fire and get him to propose a resolution that essentially would throw out our electric service provider and instead, install the City of Minneapolis as our electricity provider, I immediately placed calls and received information from all sides. I was the lone opposition at the rally held outside of City Hall. With my signs, people who were initially ‘with’ Minneapolis Energy Options saddled on over to me. The next thing I know, people were yelling and screaming how MEO had hoodwinked them into thinking that municipalizing electricity in the city of Minneapolis was a good thing. The only thing I did was merely point out the consequences of having the city supply our electricity and the fact that the city could never produce green energy which was what Minneapolis Energy Options(MEO)was going on and on about. I, then told members of MEO to request that Xcel Energy unplug them from their power grid, throw out their smartphones, go outside, pitch a tent and hug a tree and that then and only then would I actually believe that they were sincere about ‘going green’. oh and to also stay off the freeway(because of the carbon emissions). I told them to hitch a buggy to a horse and giddyup. The Amish don’t seem to have a problem with that. You see, people seriously think that they can bullshit everyone, but that shits stops at me!

Also, this is a big election year and many city council members could lose their seat. So, at the hearing, when faced with the overwhelming support by not just those from the business community, but also by the residents of Minneapolis, the city council voted on August 15th to reject placing a referendum on the November ballot asking citizens to vote for or against municipalization of our electricity and gas. You see, the City of Minneapolis would not be held to the same standards as Xcel Energy and Center Point Energy. They are regulated by the Public Utilities Commission as is their rate requests. The City of Minneapolis would not and the City of Minneapolis was trying to get us to think that they would not raise the rates. How in the hell could the City of Minneapolis purchase the infrastructure from two service providers and pay billions for them and NOT raise our rates? Seriously? Some people actually were buying this ridiculous load of bunk.

Now, we are on to the Vikings stadium where there are plenty of us upset because our taxes are to pay for yet ANOTHER stadium home for the corrupt Wilf’s and their team, the Vikings to play in while we have homeless people walking the streets. But we are all on that, especially since a story just recently broke about how Zygi Wilf and crew were sued by partners over a real estate development in New Jersey and how they did not split the profits from that venture with their partners and the judge has convicted them of civil racketeering, fraud and breach of contract. See:

Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and two other family members committed fraud, breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty and also violated the state’s civil racketeering statute, New Jersey Judge Deanne Wilson said Monday in a decision that finally wraps up a 21-year lawsuit

So, Tube….as you can see, I’m not waiting for anyone to get “off their big,fat white ass’, as you so elegantly put it.

      Thanks for stopping by Tube!

      1. Now why isn’t Tubularsock surprised Shelby that you are your very own political blitzkrieg. I’m impressed but not surprised. Tubularsock as well has stood alone against the political tide and shifted the debate toward a more equitable solution but the personal cost is often heavy. Oh, well. What else is there to do than keep up the fight? And there is plenty to do.

But I don’t mind kicking some fat, lazy white asses!

  2. “What’s right and good doesn’t come naturally. You have to stand up and fight for it – as if the cause depends on you, because it does.” –Bill Moyers

” Freedom is indivisible; the chains on any one of my people were the chains on all of them, the chains on all of my people were the chains on me.” –Nelson Mandela

What a powerful post, thank you. Given my own failings, I can almost understand a lack of courage, the fear that can keep us inert. And masses of money and effort go into making us feel helpless, and powerless to change the world. But I can never understand complacency and willful ignorance. How in hell can you convince yourself that manifest evil is in fact good? We must all stand up and fight, if we do in fact want a better world.

    1. Thank you Frederick and well stated, I might add. How indeed? People have been lulled into a state of apathy and complacency. It was done on purpose. That is why we have every convenience so that we have become too lazy to even make the effort. We have a remote control for everything so we don’t have to get up to do a damn thing. We microwave everything or stop by the drive-through and when we get home, there’s an app to do everything for us. Not to mention we are hypnotized by every bright shiny gadget that comes down the pike and they make damn sure that those of us who are easily hypnotized don’t have to go ‘ a hunkering’ for something new to distract them from what’s really going on because they make damn sure that a new device comes out, speedily, and then there are the people who simply just don’t want to know.

Again, thank you for stopping in. Look forward to seeing more of you as I truly will on your blog. I love it!

  3. Tube, I forgot to mention that I also kick some ‘fat, lazy white asses’ in my role as a ‘dominatrix’! LOL! I just couldn’t resist.

    Luv ya Tube!
Shy, brazen hussy, that I am! *wink*

      1. You ‘betcha’! *wink* *wink*

Oh and I am so sorry that at a great personal cost to you, you stood alone against the political tide. Unfortunately, it is a heavy burden that we bear when we go up against the political machine. It takes a strong willed person and one who is willing to go the distance, knowing the potential consequences. As you and I both know, people have been killed and jailed for trying to expose the secrets, the lies, depravations, war crimes and all other manner of atrocities. Those who are in political positions on the ground level are also corrupt and it just goes on up the political ladder. Laws are passed that benefit business to the detriment of ordinary citizens each and every day. Bribes are paid by corporate lobbyists to get their agenda across and the average person cannot meet the bribe of multi-billion dollar corporations. We must go about it in a different way and that is why I am loud, obnoxious and all up in their face, toting signs around, getting t-shirts printed and strutting my stuff. It gets attention. I am also learning ‘screen printing’ to print my own t-shirts because I have so many causes that need exposure. Like I stated before, I am going to aggravate, agitate and instigate and it helps to be empathetic by nature because then people love talking to you. So, if anyone messes with you, you just let me know and I’ll don my ‘dominatrix’ outfit complete with accessories and come to your aid.
        Have no fear!
        Shelby’s here!

      2. Time has passed and it is like a shirt that became too small for me ………. I’ve moved on to designer wear! Thanks for your support however. With your ‘dominatrix’ wear you should move and shake in Washington, D.C. without a hitch. Around the Supreme Court it’s clear to me that both Scalia with his repressive Catholic background and Thomas and his “Long-Dong-Silver” background you could do yourself quite proud!

I’ll keep in mind to have no fear ‘cause Shelby’s here! Thanks Shelby.
