Anyone with two eyes could see this coming and it could not happen to a more deserving bunch of ‘exceptionally’ brain dead idiots. We have stood silently by while this country’s politicians and warmongers wreaked havoc all across the globe and we did not think that the shit hitting the fan for others would ever fly back in our faces? Well, it shall and I for one, am glad that we are finally going to get our comeuppance. It is long overdue!
Rents are skyrocketing, student loan debt is enormous. Homeless tent cities are forming daily. People have no healthcare and are dying in the streets and we are supposed to be shopping? Seriously???!! The only shopping that’s getting done is shopping at the corner drug dealer’s market to dull the pain of depression, hopelessness and fear. This Titanic is finally sinking. Good riddance!

Shelby, I can’t believe that none of the economic whiz kids on Wall Streets who’ve been lobbying for austerity cuts for the last 9 years couldn’t see this coming. If you lay people off and cut their wages to subsistence levels, retail outlets inevitably suffer because they have no disposable income. I think this may be why so many people across the political spectrum are talking up an Unconditional Basic Income – to put money in peoples’ pockets so they can start spending again.

Amazon is the single most compelling reason why malls are closing and retail stores are closing by the thousands, so says the ‘economic whiz kids on Wall Street’.. We are doing fine because Amazon is raking in the dough that we don’t have, doncha know.
They can spin their stupid shit any way they please, but the simple fact is Americans are broke. College kids are moving back home with mom and dad thanks to student loan debt. I hear the next bubble to burst is going to be in the auto industry because auto loan payback ain’t happening and here comes the repo man. Not to mention, the drug dealers aka doctors are having to be paid so that Americans can continue to get those prescriptions for opioids and of course, the drug dealer must supplement that. And with rents skyrocketing, what money is left to shop until we drop on ‘Shopper’s Row’? There ain’t no money left. If they could see the lines at the food shelf, they’d get a fucking clue; they are out the door. Apartment complex managements are now asking for food donations for their tenants. So in essence, since the rents are so high and people are paying over 50% of their incomes on rent, managers of apartment complexes know this, but ‘economic whiz kids on Wall Street’ don’t? Ha! They just didn’t think this shithole would shut down this rapidly. People cannot shop when they are broke and the credit card’s been maxed out at the doctor and the pharmacy.

Thank you C.C. And I certainly hope this helps with the rise of Black owned businesses. With the demise of these types of stores that put many ‘mom and pop’ neighborhood stores out of business, it is now time to see Black ‘mom and pop’ stores opening for business once again. Everyone is not going to go online to purchase shoes they’ll have to pay shipping and handling to return. I have never wanted to purchase clothing and shoes without going inside a store to see if they’ll fit.
In my opinion, this is a kick in the right direction to get neighborhood businesses started back up. We can certainly push for this.

I agree with the mom and pop shops! Those are personally my favorite restaurants! Online shopping can be convenient but there is a lot of tricky things going on online. I’d like to see the black community veer away from online shopping, because that too can be a way to target our community. It does seem that most new b.o.b. are online so a reversion would be nice.

Indeed, it would be nice for those of us who are ‘old school’ and who still insist on actually going inside a store and do our shopping right then and there. Even though it is obvious that I have a computer, I have never used it to shop online. I like to bring my purchases home with me when I pay for them. I’m not saying that everyone should be like this, it is just how I am.
But nevertheless, I would hope that with the closing of these stores, that could open up a need for more neighborhood businesses in Black communities. And thankfully, it seems that our new mayor is pro-Black businesses. So, we shall see how this goes.
