I Remember……

I remember a time when we liked someone,
we told them so to their face.
Nowadays, we ‘like’ someone on Facebook
since we will never, ever go over to their place.

I remember when children played outside
until the street lights came on.
Nowadays, the streets are empty
because our children have a smartphone.

I remember when you met the one you love
while squeezing fruit in a grocery store.
Nowadays, you sign up for a dating site
and wait to get a compatibility score.

I remember when there was no obesity epidemic
because healthy meals were cooked at home.
Nowadays, mom and dad are working late
and so the kids have come down with ‘McDonalds and Burger King syndrome’.

I remember when bicycles and hula hoops were all the rage
and children swam, played kickball and jumped rope.
Nowadays, our children are sexting and texting
and are missing or failing in school and on dope.

I remember when I did not have to be nostalgic for the good ole days
because the good ole days were the days I grew up in.
Nowadays, I look around and I cry and I don’t know who for,
for me or for those whose life is about to begin?

I cry for me! I take a look around and I can only shake my head and sigh over how far we have come the wrong way. Technology will be the death of us and we refuse to see it. This is why I don’t blog much anymore. I am out trying to ‘live’ as opposed to being caught up in this ‘virtual’ reality. For decades, I managed to live without smartphones, laptops, PCs, Wi-Fi hotspots, microwave ovens, Wii, HDTVs and the like and I was all the better for it. I lived simply and did not covet everything I saw and again, I was all the better for it. Our values, morals, decency and principles flew out the window, decades ago when we hardened our hearts and turned to spewing hate at each other through these devices that we think we can’t live without. I bet most of you cannot even turn your laptop or your smartphone off for 24 hours. You just can’t do it. What does that say for you? Not much, I’m afraid. Do you know how much of your life you’ve given over to these devices? You say, “I’m going to take a road trip and get away from it all!” And yet, what do you do, you film the whole thing as it’s happening and either live stream it or post the whole thing on Facebook and ask for ‘likes’. You’re the only one who needs to ‘like’ it. Can’t let go of these devices even when you claim you are stepping away from it all. How sad is that?

For those of you who were alive before the internet was ‘born’ and before smartphones became all the rage, did you feel that you were missing something? Did you take trips and do you have mementos of those trips? Sure you do and you waited until you got back, took the film to the store and had it developed and now it is in a family album. My mother has family albums full of pictures of all the things we did. And we managed to get pictures of ourselves without the need of a ‘selfie’ stick. Imagine that! We are all a bunch of sad ass wimps because we are nothing like the people who have mostly passed on. They were the lucky ones because they never had to see this foolishness; this utter stupidity that we relish and spread. And we have the nerve to think that we are more advanced when we have done nothing more than embrace our own demise. Tell me. How healthy are you? You can’t be all that healthy when all you do is sit somewhere facing a computer at work and at home and en route. No one was causing an accident because they were busy texting. Did you hear of the horrible bus/truck crash in Texas? The driver of the truck is reported to have been texting while driving and caused the death of thirteen innocent people coming from a church retreat. Like I said, so-called ‘technology’ will be the death of us and so it was for those thirteen innocent people killed on a Texas road. I was a victim of a texting driver and I am still suffering tremendously and all she got was a $150 fine for failure to drive with due care. What will this 20-year old get for killing thirteen innocent people? A bigger fine? He says he’s sorry. Yep! That’ll bring those folks back to life and give them back to their loved ones. For the love of!!!!!

Witness: Driver in crash admitted texting before collision that killed 13

HOUSTON (AP) — The driver of a pickup truck that collided with a church minibus in rural Texas, killing 13 people, apologized after the crash and acknowledged he had been texting while driving, a witness said Friday.

Jody Kuchler told The Associated Press he was driving behind the truck and had seen it moving erratically prior to the Wednesday collision on a two-lane road about 75 miles west of San Antonio, near the town of Concan. Kuchler said the truck had crossed the center line several times while he followed it.

“He said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I was texting.’ I said, ‘Son, do you know what you just did?’ He said, ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry,’” Kuchler recalled.

He’s sorry? We’re ALL sorry and getting sorrier by the minute!

  1. It is because of this electronic age that we are isolated from one another. But at the same time has brought people of like mind together.

But like you, I think the overall result is an undesired one.

Technology now and has for some time dictated the way we live, in nearly every aspect. Certainly in business and personal interactions.

It has controlled minds. People around me, family, at work, they all talk about this movie and that movie, this celebrity, and that actor. And I haven’t a clue who or what they’re talking about; the digital medium is they entirety.

They don’t read anymore unless it’s useless shit on their Facebook; they don’t write anymore if they every had.

I think that’s why blogging is important, to connect like minds to one another who without this means would certainly find themselves alone in the world today.

My best friends are people of higher intelligence and awareness whom I’ve never met. Shelby, I call you my friend. And I mean that sincerely.

BTW, One time I went on a vacation and during that time I was so busy taking pictures I was missing the scenery. I put the camera away and enjoyed what was there. It’s more memorable than pictures we seldom every look at again, if ever.

I think soon technology will have no need for any of us and exist on its own.

    1. Peter, you are absolutely correct! Technology has most definitely dictated the way we live and I for one, don’t like it. I don’t like it because of the fact that I remember when the technology of today did not exist and in my opinion, we were all the better for it. We no longer like the ‘simple things in life’ because nothing is kept simple anymore. We had to go and complicate the hell out of things by thinking that we were making life more streamlined with our gadgets and this has added to the rapid decline of the entire ecosystem of this planet. The more stuff we acquire because we are brainwashed to want it, the more we hasten the death of this planet and that of all life forms on it and we cannot even see this even though we are so much more technologically advanced from decades past.

I do get your point about blogging and the fact that if not for the internet, many people would have no ‘contact’ with the outside world other than their television sets. But I also think that this has made it easier to lure people into dangerous situations and scams from all over the world. I have read about how lonely, gullible people have been scammed out of entire life savings and we all know how Craigslist ads have ended with people getting murdered. I am not saying that scams did not exist prior to the launch of the internet, but it is more prevalent now. I guess what I am doing is weighing the pros and the cons and I believe the cons have it. And I also believe that your final sentence is exactly what we are facing.

As in taking a vacation and worrying about taking more pictures than actually enjoying living in the moment, that is another point I was trying to make. We are so busy trying to capture the moment, we fail to live IN the moment and so what’s the use? I always wondered why I have hardly any pictures and I do believe it is because I would rather live in the moment than try and capture it for someone else. As long as I don’t get dementia or Alzheimer’s, I should be able to remember those ‘live in the moment’ times.

Peter, I sincerely thank you for your spot on comment. It is much appreciated oh and yes, both of your messages ended up in my trash folder. WordPress, mucks up again!

  2. You really touched a nerve there Shelby. My son and grandson were hit from behind by a driver, about a year and a half ago, whom we believe was texting. The car was a write off. Fortunately, my son and grandson only had minor injuries, but that incident has had a lasting impact. I’m so sorry to hear about your accident. It can change your life dramatically.

    1. It does indeed change your life drastically and dramatically. I will never be the same again. I am not 15 and so I cannot bounce back from broken bones, traumatic brain injury, shoulder tears and back injuries and I am having to deal with all of this and then I had to read of this horrible accident in Texas and it was just beyond the end of enough. How stupid can ‘humans’ be when they will get behind the wheel of something that weighs several tons and then promptly ignore the fact of this to the point where they will distract themselves by texting? It just boggles the mind. And to make matters worse, I hear tell that self-driving vehicles are coming down the pike and there have already been crashes as a result of self-driving cars. People don’t understand that anything ‘man-made’ is going to break down? We are some real stupid shits, we are! We don’t care about ourselves and so we damn sure as hell don’t care about others, “but we are living in the age of technology,” we say. Ha! It’s certainly not smartened us up any when we can think that we can text and drive and that a ‘self-driving’ car is also a smart idea.

Leslie, I thank you for your comment and I can certainly sympathize with what your son and grandson had to go through, I sincerely do! I hope they are both doing well.

      1. Leslie, I am so sorry! I can only imagine how drastically his life has changed. I had to fight with insurance companies for years before coming to a settlement agreement and still it does nothing for what I’m going through. Nothing can improve my health. Certainly no amount of money can. You can’t even enjoy it when you’re having to bite your lip to keep from screaming in agony.

I can only hope that your son’s situation improves!

  3. I share your sadness, Shelby, about the way direct human interaction has virtually died with the advent of the Internet and social media. I suspect that’s the main reason I continue to be active in so many local community groups – sometimes I feel I’m literally starving for human contact.

    1. Dr. Bramhall, this is one of the reasons why I was constantly thinking about moving back to the East Coast when I was in Minnesota, it was because I didn’t know many people there and despite the number of groups I tried to join, those people are too clannish to ever accept outsiders.

Since moving back to the East Coast, I find myself less angry since I have been out and about, interacting with people and re-establishing contact with old friends. People don’t seem to understand that we are social creatures. And just because ‘social’ media has the word, social’ in it, that does not count. It cannot take the place of direct human contact and that is what I missed most when I was in Minnesota. Here, I have all the human interaction I can handle because I am an East Coast girl, originally and so I am not so isolated.

Thank you! You got to the heart of this message!

  4. I was most certainly born before smartphones but also, my generation as seen the birth and obsolescence of many technologies. I’m happy to say, I had a wonderful childhood and I totally agree with you that people related better and were more well-rounded personality wise, spiritually and morally back in the day. I reminisce a lot too…

    1. Thank you for your comment Truthangel07! You certainly spoke the truth because I too feel that we “were more well-rounded….” than we are today and since we had to meet each other face to face, we were more conscious of what we said to one another because now that we can sit at a computer screen and type in hateful words without ever having to face who we are aiming those words at, it seems to embolden people to be even more vicious towards each other. This is not, in my opinion, progress. Quite the opposite, in fact. And so yes, I reminisce much and hanker for a time when computers or smartphones did not exist and when eating out was a treat as opposed to a daily way of life. And then we wonder why we have an obesity epidemic. I don’t.

Again, thank you for your comment. It was spot on!
