Mayor of NYC mulls plan to build tent city for influx of migrants

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced he is considering putting up large tents as temporary shelter for the influx of relocated migrants the city is struggling to accommodate, The Associated Press reports.

The proposed tent city is one of many options city officials are considering to house the estimated 13,000 migrants that have arrived from Texas and Arizona. Cruise ships and summer camps are also on the table.

“This is not an everyday homelessness crisis, but a humanitarian crisis that requires a different approach,” Adams said in a statement Thursday.

Despite its extensive system of homeless shelters, New York City is struggling to find accommodations for the newcomers. MINNEAPOLIS — A sprawling homeless encampment that had hundreds of tents at its peak is gone from Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis. Sanitation workers hauled away the last few tents Monday, July 20, and park police arrested about 20 people, residents and activists who refused to leave.

I called the cable company and the automated system message stated, “There have been improvements made in your area, we thank you for your patience.” I got on the phone with a representative of the cable company and the conversation devolved into my becoming enraged to the point whereas my cussing shitstorm erupted so bad that my cousin had to take the phone away from me in order for the cable representative to tell him how to get that Spanish speaking shit off the fucking TV. Now, I don’t even watch TV, I was just incensed at the very idea that we are soon going to be bombarded with that Spanish speaking shit to the point whereas there will be no turning back and I’m not about to learn fucking Spanish. It was bad enough when I lived in Minnesota to look up at the signs in the aisle at Cub Foods grocery store, and on one side, the signs were in English and on the other, the signs were in Spanish. I guess that’s about to change to ALL SPANISH. It was the late 1970s, and he was 8 or 9 years old, the eighth in a family of 11 children from a poor and mostly African-American neighborhood in Hartford, Connecticut. Black Babies in Kansas are More Likely to Die Than White Babies, and the Pandemic Made Things Worse

Wichita, KS— For years, Black babies in Kansas faced an outsized chance of dying before their first birthday. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and things got even worse.

Now, a Black baby is nearly three and a half times as likely to die in the state as a white baby. While the nationwide rate of infant mortality dropped between 2019 and 2020, the rate in Kansas swelled about 19% — and for Black children, it surged nearly 58%.

That means that for every 1,000 Black children born, nearly 17 died within their first year of life. For white children, the rate is fewer than five out of every 1,000.

“We knew that (the pandemic) was going to impact Black infant mortality,” said Sapphire Garcia-Lies, a Wichita-based doula and the founder of Kansas Birth Justice Society, a nonprofit working to lower racial disparities around maternal and infant health. “But I don’t think any of us knew that it would be that bad.”

Black families run into more barriers in accessing health care before, during and after pregnancy, said Sharla Smith, a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center who directs the Kansas Birth Equity Network. And the care those families get, she said, is often worse than what white families can expect.

“We see a lot of discrimination,” Smith said. “We’re also hearing from our parents that they’re not listened to.”

She said part of that stems from systemic racism in the health care system, including a dearth of Black and brown doctors.

I have been in the apartment that I am currently being pushed out of for FIVE years. Even through the plandemic, I paid my rent in FULL and before it was due and for that, I get evicted. So, this just shows that you can do everything right and still get shitted on. So, what’s the use? I am tired of kowtowing to scumlords while having no rights at all since I have done nothing but pay my rent, be a good tenant by causing no other tenants any issues and this is the thanks I get for doing everything right. I even saved up money for a down payment to buy a house, found a house that I could afford, called the bank for a loan and was turned down because….wait for it….I DIDN’T ASK FOR ENOUGH OF A LOAN FOR THEM TO EVEN BOTHER. I NEED TO ASK FOR MORE MONEY! Now, I know what I can afford, but the banks want us to overextend ourselves and thus they get to take the home back. A win/win for them and another big ass loss for us. Black folks can’t even break even, much less win. We pay our rent to these corporate scumlords and Black folks like me who have a solid rental history, no criminal record of any sort, not even a misdemeanor or a parking ticket and yet, I’m being forced into homelessness and why? Jackson Water Crisis Fueled By Flooding, Years Of Decay

Residents in Jackson, Mississippi, are struggling to find clean water to drink, wash and cook with.

It’s a crisis that goes back decades.

Years of decaying infrastructure, extreme winter weather and flooding have helped push the city’s water system to a point where people sometimes can’t flush toilets or bathe in their own homes.

“The water issues in Jackson really date back to the early ‘80s when they began to notice that there were issues within the infrastructure of the water system,” Ross Reily, a reporter at the Clarion-Ledger, said in an interview Wednesday.

“As we rocked along there would be Band-Aids put on it here and there. And then we got around to 2010 when there was an ice storm … that ended up causing burst pipes all over the city.”

The governor at the time declared a state of emergency over dozens of water main breaks that came after several days of freezing temperatures. Schools and government offices were shut down and businesses closed.

Fast forward to January of 2021, when another round of unusually frigid weather caused the same kinds of problems.

First on CNN: US left behind $7 billion of military equipment in Afghanistan after 2021 withdrawal, Pentagon report says

Washington (CNN)Approximately $7 billion of military equipment the US transferred to the Afghan government over the course of 16 years was left behind in Afghanistan after the US completed its withdrawal from the country in August, according to a congressionally mandated report from the US Department of Defense viewed by CNN.

The Defense Department has no plans to return to Afghanistan to “retrieve or destroy” the equipment, reads the report, which has been provided to Congress. This equipment is now in a country that is controlled by the very enemy the US was trying to drive out over the past two decades: the Taliban.

The US gave a total of $18.6 billion of equipment to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) from 2005 to August 2021, according to the report. Of that total, equipment worth $7.12 billion remained in Afghanistan after the US withdrawal was completed on August 30, 2021. It included aircraft, air-to-ground munitions, military vehicles, weapons, communications equipment and other materials, according to the DoD report.

A luxury Manhattan hotel will soon be used to provide housing to hundreds of illegal migrants, according to the New York Post.

NYC earmarks $2 million for Ukrainians fleeing war

Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn homeland for the Big Apple will be eligible to get relief under a new $2.1 million outlay Mayor Adams announced Friday.

The cash will pay for legal services, translation for non-English speakers, housing assistance and health care services, according to city officials.

Adams and Ukraine’s Consul General Oleksii Holubov unveiled the creation of the city’s new assistance fund Friday afternoon on the steps of City Hall.

“We stand with you. We support you. Not only in words, but in deeds,” Adams said. “Our tradition is always welcome our brothers and sisters who flee conflicts across the globe.”

If ‘charity begins at home’, then what I would like to know is when? Because from where I sit, there is no charity being distributed among America’s citizens who have been living too long as though they are in a warzone. Why do they not matter? Why is there no concerted effort to throw millions and billions to get people off the streets and into affordable housing since we’ve got people who have been homeless for decades and yet some racist shits have been having issues for a little over a month and that’s the biggest, most horrifying scenario ever. NO.IT.IS.NOT. Why do we have NO problem overlooking the obvious here to concentrate on some shit that has NOTHING to do with US? But where is the outrage? On Instagram? Facebook? Youtube? Twitter? Oh, there are a few whines and moans, but that’s it, that’s all because like I’ve already stated, Americans were pumped full of toxins placed in the food, water and air in order to make them compliant, apathetic, lazy, clueless and basically brain dead. And now look around you. No one needed to take your guns from you because the only thing you’re doing with those guns is lazily raising them to kill a member of your household which is occurring according to the news, daily. And now, the U.S. government is already screeching about refugees from Ukraine heading west. The U.S. government just sent planeloads of Afghan refugees over here and there are commercials asking regular American citizens to house and feed the Afghan refugees when we, ourselves are facing homelessness and starvation and so now, there are going to be commercials touting the need for us to help house the refugees from Ukraine. SERIOUSLY???!!! For the love of!!!!! I’m done. Stick a fork in me, I am done!
