A Black Rose In Bloom!

black-roses-in-bloom-one

Too dark, but yet, always seen
at each and every crime scene.
Whether you stand for peace or not,
whatever you do, it is all for naught.

You can be Dr. King with a dream
or Malcolm X with a Black power scream.
But either way, you’ll end up dead;
no life in you; just a tombstone at your head.

You can be a doctor walking home from work
and be shot because in that neighborhood, you should not lurk.
You go to school because you want an education,
but they peg you instead for incarceration.

They gave you a month to celebrate achievements
for all the assassinations, funerals and bereavements.
You are sent to their doctors to receive a cure
and told you’ve got bad blood; it just ain’t pure.

They say, “Vaccinate your children against this disease,”
while they fill you with lead paint; those who are your enemies.
Never look to the ones with no melanin in their skin
and expect to come out on top, or to win.

Their desire is not that you should ever thrive
but for all they do to you, you still manage to survive.
So, fear not that Trump will be the harbinger of your doom
for he too is powerless to stop a Black rose in bloom!

I wrote this because as we all know, we just finished ‘celebrating’ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and for all that has been going down, I don’t even know why. For surely he could never have perceived in his wildest ‘dreams’ that we would be where we are now, but then again, he most likely would not be surprised since it is widely known that he was about to change his stance from one of peaceful to aggressive because peaceful just wasn’t getting it done. And us Black folk had better go about things all peaceful like, if we are to go about at all. Otherwise, it’s a coffin for us.

And yet, they set aside a day in remembrance of a man they killed because he finally figured out what most of us know and that is that the white man is not going to give up his ‘white privilege’ that he has decreed unto himself; not without a fight. Malcolm X knew this and that is why he was called a ‘radical’ and assassinated. We need more like him but all we have is the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who are nothing more than sell-out dogs begging for the white man’s table scraps. They do not represent us. They are only out for themselves.

So, as we approach Black History Month that the whites have so graciously given to us to celebrate all their achievements of shooting, lynching or sickening us and our loved ones, we must remember to thank them for their generosity in giving us the month of February to be used as one short month of bereavement over the fact of mass incarceration, assassinations, lynching, gentrification, income inequality, low educational attainment, a school-to-prison pipeline,  mass homelessness, indifferent health care, eugenics experimentation and we must also thank them for allowing us to continue to play subservient roles that entail cleaning, cooking and other domestic type duties that we crawled into boats to come over here alongside all the other ‘immigrants’ to do. With friends like these, we don’t need enemies and yet, despite all of this, the Black rose still blooms! May it forever bloom in spite of and despite ‘them’!

Gun-Toting White Folks!

WTF5

We gun-toting white folks are a blessing to this land.
So, Black folks, you know just where you fucking stand.
It’s a goddamn emergency, now be in bed by nine.
Get off the fucking street before your ass is mine.

I’ve got Humvees on the prowl to protect the status quo.
I’ll fuck you up and lock you up, to jail, your ass will go.
Don’t think for one damn minute that you’re free to walk the street.
Step off the goddamn curb and a wall of blue, you’ll meet.

Now get your Black ass on your knees and humble yourself to me.
I get paid to shoot to kill and I am on a killing spree.
Your protests, they don’t matter, just you ask Dr. King.
He got just what you’re getting; his life didn’t mean a thing.
You think I care about your dreams? Who dropped you on your head?
The only good nigga I know is a nigga that is dead!

Heavily-armed members of a controversial right-wing “patriot” group added an extra dose of unease to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, early Tuesday.

The Oath Keepers organization says its members — all former military, police and first responders — pledge to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Protesters and police confirmed that a handful of Oath Keepers with what appeared to be assault rifles, bulletproof vest and camouflage gear were seen early Tuesday on the streets of Ferguson, which was under a state of emergency following demonstrations pegged to the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death.

Now, how about that? Too bad the Ferguson protesters didn’t show up with ‘assault rifles, bulletproof vests and camouflage gear’ because maybe, just maybe, the ‘wall of blue’ would have merely considered them to be ‘oath keepers’; defenders of the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic’. But what I would like to know is who is the ‘enemy’ in Ferguson, MO that has the Constitution under assault? It would appear to me that the ‘oath keepers’ should have initiated a shoot-out with the police since the police, with their armored vehicles on the streets of the ‘land of the free and home of the brave’, are the shit-stirrers that are assaulting the Constitutional rights of the Black protesters in Ferguson, MO. Oh my bad! Those Black protesters, at the time the Constitution was written weren’t even considered ‘citizens’ of AMERICA:

A

Murdering

Evil

Rotten

Insanely

Corrupt

Abomination

is AMERICA!

..and Black people, change your chant from “Black lives matter!” to “Why the fuck am I over here? That shit ain’t crystal clear?” Just keep reminding the white motherfuckers why you are the fuck in this shithole and the next time you show up at a protest rally, remember to bring your assault weapons, bulletproof vests and camouflage gear. Oh, my bad AGAIN! You’ll still be Black, so never mind, that won’t work! You’ve got to be white to strut around, carrying an assault weapon out in the open, wearing bulletproof vests and camouflage gear calling yourself  an ‘oath keeper’, code words for KKK, Aryan Brotherhood, skin heads and the like. For the love of ………!!!!!

The Flag Has Been Replaced!

flag has been replaced

The flag has been replaced,

and freedom has been displaced,

to a cold and lonely grave,

along with another slave.

The flag’s new color scheme,

does not share in Dr. King’s dream,

that he dreamt in days long gone,

when he marched for a brighter dawn,

and for our basic human rights,

rights enjoyed by all the whites.

The flag is black and blue,

and red is its color too.

It stands for all Black men,

confined in the new slave pen.

Red is the color they bleed,

because of supremacy’s creed.

Blue is the color of woe,

it’s long been the Black man’s foe.

Wherever there’s a cop in blue,

you WILL bid a Black man, “Adieu!”

Yes Black is under attack,

so please watch each other’s back.

They know we have no place to go,

because they stole us so long ago!

The Amerikkkan flag don’t mean shit to me because it was never meant FOR me. So, I’ll never salute it or claim to fight for it! To hell with it and fuck it!

An Inconvenient Theme!

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

What is the point of sacrifice,
when the crooks engage in vice?

And yet, you died for a cause,
they’ve scratched that with new laws!

The hypocrites do honor you,
of course, that’s nothing new.

They profit off your name,
the ones who have no shame.

You’re still a money maker,
and a mover and a shaker.

They’d back the ones who murdered you.
And claim what’s false is true.

You’ll always be a scapegoat,
so that we don’t rock the boat.

We can’t be radical and wild,
they tell us that was not your style.

We tout you out this time each year
And loudly clap and cheer.

They really don’t like your dream,
it had an inconvenient theme.

We are living the DREAM! NOT!!!!!!!

The Dreamers

1963 march on washington

In a little over a week from today, government offices will close in honor of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his “I Have A Dream” speech will be played and his image will be displayed on television screens and all across the internet and we will once again, put on a pedestal this man who had a dream, a dream that was shared by millions who stood, marched, protested and died because ALL people should have equal rights under the law. And so, here we go again, another year of “I Have A Dream!” Another year of living a nightmare, nowhere near to a dream. So many sacrificed themselves and for what? Take a look around and again, I ask..for what?

And so, here’s to the ‘dreamers’….

He had a dream and like most dreams, they fade with the rising sun.
There were many who dreamed with him and they are but whispers in the wind.
Those who are left to carry on buried their torch and sold their legacy.
Their sacrifices were in vain as the book of dreams closed when they died.
Today, it pays to be a sell-out and not a dreamer, nor a sacrificial lamb.
The so-called Black leaders of today, crawl like dogs and beg at Massa’s table.
They don’t stand tall with the bearing of kings; today, they are weak.
Black men of today lack the qualities found in leaders; they’re not leaders, they are followers.
Their women are treated with contempt and disrespect and even hatred.
They’ve turned their backs on their little children and shunned them one and all.
From their mouths, they spew forth the foulness of the gutter.
They hate themselves and this does show when their pants sag to their ankles.
What education they received was from a prison in every United State.
Their money is from drug sells, bought and packaged by their government.
They are sold up and down plantation row and the bars are made of steel.
When they are put out on the streets, they are taught to rob and steal.
If they’re not caught up in the new slavery, they are rotting in a box.
Is this the dream that was dreamt so many years ago?
Did a sacrificial lamb envision this hell on earth that is without end?
What are ‘Al Sharp’con’ and ‘Jesse Jack’con’ doing about this nightmare that is no dream?
They are the dogs that crawl to corporations with hat in hand to pave their way to gold.
I hear tell of a Black man in the manse; it is the greatest lie that was ever told.
Yes, a man did have a dream as did so many, many others but his dream and theirs is but a whisper in the wind.
…and the flames of hatred, racism, injustice, brutality, slavery and barbarism light up the dreamer’s night.
There are no dreamers today, only schemers and liars and hypocrites and dogs who crawl to Massa!
Goodnight and sweet dreams Dr. King and to all the others who stood tall; Malcolm X, Fannie Lou Hamer, Bayard Rustin*, and A. Philip Randolph and to so many, many others as your dreams died with you and only hate and greed is our reality.

Black men in America, I dare you to go to the above link and take a look at how ‘MEN’ dressed. They are not unkempt and disheveled, pants down around their ankles, can hardly walk properly. If your ass was down around your ankles, then your pants would be made that way. Show some self-respect and get some dignity, even if you have to borrow some.

…and Black women, you don’t get off that easy. These ‘men’ are your sons and this is what you teach them? To go out in public with some jailhouse look about them? Where is their father? There was a time when Black women had more respect for themselves, for their bodies. What is wrong with you? And then some of us have the temerity to wonder why Black men fall right in with Massa’s plans for them. When they have no one in the home to look up to, who do you think they will emulate? Why do you think gangs and violence and drugs are prevalent in Black communities all across this country? Yes, I know there is poverty, but there was poverty back in the ’60s and yet, our grandmothers never dressed the way you do, they didn’t open their legs to every man who blinked at them. We’ve come a long way and we’ve come the wrong way. Take some of the responsibility for what you produce. A culture of Black men who impregnate women and then move on without a backward glance, on to the next. A perpetuating cycle that is destructive and we see the effects every single day. And then you will have the audacity to point to a picture of those who struggled during the Civil Rights Movement and exclaim over what they tried to accomplish and you will take pride in it. For what? Because there is nothing to be proud of today, that is for certain. With the majority of your sons behind the steel bars of slavery or out in the streets selling drugs, pimping and killing and making babies that may or may not even live to grow up and turn out to be just like some ‘daddy’ they won’t even know. Yes, we’ve come the ‘wrong’ way!

Another dreamer…..

An Open Letter to Barack Obama

obama3

Dear Puppet Obama,

I am going to try and keep this letter to you, as disrespectful as I possibly can. First of all I would not like to take this opportunity to inform you that I foolishly voted for you not once, but twice. I voted for you the first time around because I protested the war in Iraq and the second time because the only alternative(other than not voting at all) was Mitt Romney. I knew that the Iraq war was based on lies long before the truth that it was indeed based on lies, ever came out.  So here you come along all fresh and new and young and spouting off about how you are against dumb wars. I sigh a huge sigh of relief because I’m thinking that finally, here is a person that is truly just as war weary as I am and so I went to the polls and voted for you. Many thought that I voted for you because….and wait for it…you’re Black! No, that wasn’t it. I’ll even let you in on a little secret. Since I was in Minnesota at the time and Minnesota is just overflowing with white folks and I am just bumping into them all the time, I was privvy to many conversations by those whose skin pigmentation is much lighter than my tan one. Many of them were voting for you and not because of your complexion but because they were thinking the same thing that I was, that you would be so war weary and would understand that we are too, that you would not get us embroiled in another conflict, another war that is. Others stated that they voted for you because John McCain was just too damn old!  How innocent and trusting we were. How completely naive we were to believe that you would be different, that you hadn’t lied and sold your soul to the puppetmasters. Oh, yes, you tricked us and you tricked us out.

But I digress. We watched while you decided to ensure that there would be health care for all and then we watched when you caved-in on the public option to the republicans. We watched and took note when you failed to do anything about the Bush bailouts that bailed out the biggest fraudsters in history, the Wall Street bankers, a bailout paid for by us and again, we watched those same crooks push bad loans on to people who were trying to realize the ‘American dream’ by seeking to become homeowners. We watched as report after report came out stating that those who were actual prime borrowers were steered into taking out subprime loans and we watched as churches were foreclosed on. We watched dreams shrivel and die. We watched the creation of homeless tent cities resulting from the criminal behavior by those beloved ‘too big to fail’ fraudsters on Wall Street who after we bailed them out, turned around and rewarded themselves with multi-million dollar bonuses.

So, I ask when will the statistics of the poor and the homeless, the uninsured and the hungry, the seniors who must choose between medication and food, when will their numbers, their statistics demand that they are too big to be left to fail? When will you concentrate on the little children in this country since you have so much compassion for the little children in Syria that you had decided to strike the hell out of them to prove it? You see, there was a child by the name of Deamonte Driver, twelve years old who was here in America, writhing on some floor in Prince Georges County, Maryland who died because an infection from a tooth spread to his brain and killed him. Yes, yes, I know, it was before your time in the White House, but we both know that there are thousands of Deamonte Drivers who are at this very moment dying or ‘writhing’ in pain because their parents cannot afford needed medical care even with the passage of the Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act(PPACA) because many remain unemployed and if they have medicaid, there is often a wait of several months to be seen. I know this because in a little town in Virginia where I was born, I spoke with parents of children who had serious dental issues and they were waiting months to be seen. Adults who had worked until retirement and saved for it are waiting for medical services from ‘free clinics’ because they cannot afford health insurance. Many times, it took a herculean effort from me to even look these people in the face because of how bad their teeth were. What about those people? Do they even matter? Every single one of them voted for you, stood in long lines to do so. What are you doing for them now?

As you know, the Black community overwhelmingly voted for you and even now, the majority of them will not hear one harsh word uttered against you. You are undeserving of such loyalty as you have done nothing to earn it. You have ignored their plight. You have spit in their face. How little did they know that you had nothing in common with them. Your skin color does not make you Black, only the white man’s ‘one drop’ rule made you check the box, “African-American” on your census form. You have nothing in common with the descendants of African slaves, that is not your heritage, but it is mine and it is theirs, the ones who voted for you, myself included. What did we expect from you? Certainly not what we got, total and shameless contempt for us. With every speech you have given about the Black community, you have deliberately pointed the finger at us and blamed us for not hiring ourselves. You have blamed us for the double digit Black unemployment figures.  You have blamed us for the disintegration of our families and our neighborhoods due to unmitigated poverty, drugs and crime and gang violence. You have blamed us for the discrimination that we face on a daily basis. You have blamed us for the mass incarceration of our young Black men when they cannot get a good education and instead turn to criminal activity. You have blamed us for a poor public education system that is found in inner cities all across America. You have blamed us for not following in your lofty footsteps. You have accused of us of not working hard enough. You have chastized us, disrespected us, blamed us, degraded us and denounced us and to make matters worse, you went so far as to do this when speaking at the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.  The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was so above you in stature, in integrity, in honor, humility and compassion that there is no comparison and you defile him when you even so much as utter his name. He would be ashamed of you! He would chastize you! He would have nothing to do with you! And as to why? We both know the answer to that!

Finally, you have your place in history, of that you are assured. But history will not look favorably upon you and neither do I. History will show that you were undeserving in being called the first Black president of the United States of America because that, you are not. Your history is not our history. You are the first  Kenyan/Caucasian American president of the United States because the so-called ‘African-Americans’ born in this country are the descendants of slaves and that, you are not. When you stated that you would be a “president for ALL Americans”, you did not include ‘African-Americans in that statement because your subsequent actions demoted that statement to a lie. And just as you lied about your reasoning behind military strikes on Syria, we have found that we cannot trust you as you are a proven liar. You even lied when you ran as an anti-war candidate and now you want to engage us in a war based on fabrications, lies and chemical weapons. You know the history of this country and you know that this country has used chemical weapons on numerous occasions and had no problem doing so. You are dropping drones on people as I type this. You are eradicating more of our rights. You are shredding the constitution. You? Anti-war? In the words of South Carolina’s republican representative Joe Wilson, “You lie!”

Wishing that we could impeach your sorry, worthless ass(but who of any worth could take your place?).

Signed,

Shelby I. Courtland

The 50th Anniversary of the Epic March on Washington

'We marched and we protested and still we are detested'....and we keep on marching, marching, marching.
‘We marched and we protested and still we are detested’….and we keep on marching, marching, marching.
…and what do we have to show for it?

•African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population
•African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites

Blacks bear a disproportionate share of the unemployment burden. The national jobless rate is 7.4 percent; for African Americans, it’s 13.7

The African-American and African-American child hunger and poverty rates are even greater than the national averages—sometimes nearly twice as high

In case you didn’t hear, the Department of Education released a report that essentially told many of us what we already knew: inner city schools are in a bad state. Its Office of Civil Rights’ study on college and career readiness, discipline, school finance and student retention showed that minority children face harsher discipline, have less access to rigorous high school curriculum and are taught by lower-paid and less experienced teachers.

It noted that while black males make up 18% of students, 35% were suspended once and 39% expelled.

Significant statistical research exists regarding race and the death penalty, and race is an issue that continues to be at the forefront of America’s capital punishment debate. Studies have indicated that race plays a decisive role in the question of who lives and dies by execution in this country. According to some studies, race can influence which cases are chosen for capital prosecution and which prosecutors are allowed to make those decisions. Racial disparities have been shown not just in isolated instances, but in many state studies over many years.

The Trayvon Martin Killing, Explained

….and the battle against hate, injustice, racial inequality rages on 50 years later. The dream is not a reality and not likely to become a reality anytime soon. We are heading back in time. We have lost ground. We have not made many gains. The election of President Obama to the presidency is nothing to herald as Black people are failing faster all across the board since the beginning of his presidency. He has completely ignored the Black community who overwhelmingly supported him. He has thumbed his nose at everything the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., stood, marched, protested and was jailed and beaten for. He is not fit to even whisper Dr. King’s name.

Even though I wrote this poem for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I feel that it is worth posting here on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

For Martin Luther King Jr., Day

People say we’ve come so far.
It all depends on who you are.

There’s been no other to fill your shoes.
Today, you’ll again make headline news.

Would you be pleased at what you see?
Is your dream a reality?

No, your dream is not alive! It crumbled into dust.
And all that’s left to show for it is just another bust.

The vibrant voice is stilled, mere echoes of the past.
Your dream did not live on, a net you tried to cast.

The battle rages on as hate will never rest.
And men who lack in courage will always fail the test.

Who rings the bell for freedom and human rights for all?
While men cease to stand and to corporations crawl.

Who will ignite the spark and watch the fire burn?
And who will just sit back and say, “no, it’s not my turn?”

Will there ever be another Martin Luther King?
Who dreamed that one day, the freedom bell would ring.

“Let freedom ring! Let freedom ring!”
It’s still a dream, Dr. Martin Luther King.
